Baseball Downs Cal Poly, 13-2

Fourth-ranked Stanford pounded four Cal Poly SLO pitchers for 13 runs and 16 hits, including seven extra base hits, en route to a 13-2 non-conference victory at Sunken Diamond.

The Cardinal, 42-13 on the season, closes out the regular season tomorrow at 1:00 pm vs. Cal Poly. Stanford will host the NCAA Regionals beginning next Friday at Sunken Diamond.

John Gall led the Stanford assault with two home runs and three RBI. He hit a solo homer leading off the third inning to give the Cardinal a 3-0 lead and a two-run homer, his ninth of the season, in the seventh.

Josh Hochgesang had four hits and three RBI, including a two-run double in the first and an RBI triple in the fifth. His triple sparked a five-run fifth inning which put the Cardinal on top 8-0. Following Hochesang's RBI triple, right fielder Joe Borchard also tripled, scoring Hochesang. Catcher Damien Alvarado then hit a towering two-run homer to end the five-run barrage.

Justin Wayne (8-1) pitched the first five innings for Stanford to pick up the win. Wayne allowed no runs on five hits while striking out six. The Mustang's Mike Zirelli (7-7) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs in four innings of work.

Stanford built its lead to 13-0 with it second, five-run inning of the game - this time coming in the seventh inning. Gall's two-run homer made the score 10-0 Stanford. Pinch hitter Joe Savig walked with the bases loaded for an 11-0 lead. Edmund Muth capped the inning with a two-run double, putting the Cardinal on top 13-0.
