AUSTIN, Texas - With the bases loaded and the score tied at three in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, sophomore Sam Anderson was hit by the 0-2 pitch from Stanford pitcher Dan Rich (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) to bring in junior Chris Houser with the game winning run in the Longhorns' 4-3 win over the Cardinal this evening at Disch-Falk Field.
After seven and one half scoreless innings, Texas (21-8) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when junior Mike Pumo, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, drove in junior Steve Woodward and Anderson with his second double of the night. Stanford (16-8) then battled back in the top of the ninth inning when sophomore Jon Borchard (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo) doubled in a run and junior Eric Bruntlett (North Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) hit a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 2-2. Stanford's Billy Jacobson (Spring, Texas/St. Thomas) then gave the Cardinal their first lead of the game with an RBI single to right.
Sophomore Jason Moore, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored, then connected on his 15th double of the year to spark a Longhorn rally as Texas proceeded to load the bases with a pair of walks off Cardinal pitcher Mike Gosling (Salt Lake City, Utah/East), who suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Rich then came on in relief for the Cardinal and walked Anderson to give Texas the dramatic come-from-behind win.
Senior Scott Hild came on in relief of Texas starter D.J. Jones, who pitched eight innings of scoreless baseball, to pick up his first career win as a Longhorn, while Stanford starter Brian Sager (Branford, Conn./Branford), who did not allow a run over 5.2 innings and struck out four, received a no-decision.
