SEATTLE - In a battle of Pac-10 pitching aces, Jeff Heaverlo out-dueled Jason Young to lead the No. 25 Washington baseball team to a 3-2 win over No. 2 Stanford Friday night at Husky Ballpark. The loss was the first of the Pac-10 season for the Cardinal.
Heaverlo, a junior from Ephrata, Wash., improved to 6-1 with the victory while Young fell to 6-2. The Huskies upped their record to 19-10 overall and 7-3 in the Pac-10 while Stanford dropped to 23-9, 9-1.
Heaverlo worked seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks. Young, a sophomore from Berkeley, Calif., fanned 12 and also allowed only two earned runs in his eight-inning, complete-game outing.
With the game tied at 2-2 with two outs in the seventh, Washington rallied for the go-ahead run. After a Marc Rittenhouse single and a Nick Stefonick double put runners at second and third, catcher Dominic Woody reached on a chopper to the shortstop, sending Rittenhouse home with the third run.
Stanford took a 1-0 lead in the first when leadoff hitter Billy Jacobson singled, stole second and scored on a John Gall single. In the third, catcher Damien Alvarado singled home Josh Hochgesang to give the Cardinal a 2-0 edge.
Washington tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Stefonick scored on an error and Richard Hall crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
The Huskies and Cardinal continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
