Box Score & Play-by-Play

FULLERTON, Calif. - Sophomores Adam Johnson (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines HS) and Kirk Saarloos (Long Beach, CA/Valley Christian HS) combined on a two-hit shutout to lead No. 14 Cal State Fullerton (1-0) to an 8-0 victory over visiting Stanford (1-3) on Friday night at Titan Field. The defeat was Stanfords third in a row.

The Titans erupted for four runs in the bottom of the first inning against Cardinal starter Jason Young (0-1; Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS) and never looked back. Junior Ryan Owens (La Habra, CA/Sonora HS) highlighted the rally with a two-run single to left.

The four runs were more than enough for Johnson and Saarloos. Johnson allowed just the two hits over 6.1 innings, while walking five and striking out seven to earn the victory. Saarloos then retired all eight batters he faced to preserve the shutout, The shutout was the first against the Cardinal since a 1-0 loss to Fresno State on February 8, 1997 at Sunken Diamond.

Juniors Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS) and Jeff Rizzo (San Diego, CA/LaJolla HS) led Stanford with a single apiece.

Game two of the three-game series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
