Cardinal Faces No. 1 Florida in WNITC Semifinals

February 19, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 5 Stanford women's tennis team emerged victorious in a battle of two previously unbeaten teams, as the Cardinal topped No. 10 William & Mary 7-1 in quarterfinal action at the USTA/ITA Women's National Indoor Team Championship I Madison, Wisc. The Cardinal improves to 10-0 in dual matches, while W&M drops to 8-1.

Stanford and William & Mary last met in the quarterfinals of the 1997 NCAA Championships, with the Cardinal advancing with a 6-0 win en route to the school's ninth national team title. The Cardinal will face top-ranked Florida in the semifinals tomorrow afternoon (2:30 p.m. CST). The two programs have combined to win all but two of the 11 previous USTA/ITA National Team Indoor titles held at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The WNITC is now in its 12th year at the University of Wisconsin. Eight of the top 10 teams, according to the ITA, are attending. Stanford has competed at this tournament each of those years and boasts a 38-7 record.
