Cal Outlasts No. 4 Cardinal, 3-2, in 14 Innings Golden Bears avoid three-game sweep.

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Kevin Johnson's (Oakland, CA/St. Joseph HS) solo home run with two outs in the top of the 14th inning lifted California (6-8) to the 3-2 upset over fourth-ranked Stanford (10-4) on Monday night at Sunken Diamond. The 14-inning game was Stanford's longest since a 5-4, 14-inning home loss to Arizona State on February 25, 1994.

Johnson, who was making his first plate appearance of the season, went deep against Cardinal reliever Tony Cogan (0-1; Highland Park, IL/Highland Park HS) for the second home run of his career. Freshman Trevor Hutchinson (Del Mar, CA/Torrey Pines HS) walked Joe Savig (Lodi, CA/St. Mary's HS) to lead off the bottom of the 14th but retired the next three batters in order to improve to 2-0 on the season. Hutchinson did not allow a hit in 5.0 innings of relief, while walking four and striking out five, to snap the Cardinal's nine-game winning streak.

After the teams each scored a run in the first, Cal took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on David Sark's (Chatsworth, CA/Chatsworth HS) RBI single. Stanford then tied the game on senior Josh Hochgesang's (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) run-scoring double in the sixth, but the teams traded zeroes until Johnson's heroics in the 14th.

Three Stanford pitchers combined to allow just nine hits, and strike out 18 in the loss. Freshman Brian Sager (Branford, CT/Branford HS), who was making his first collegiate start, allowed six hits and two runs over 5.0 innings, while striking out six. Freshman Mike Gosling (Salt Lake City, UT/East HS) then allowed just one hit over 5.0 scoreless innings, while striking out eight, before Cogan received the hard-luck loss after allowing just two hits and the one run over 4.0 innings.

Stanford returns to action on Tuesday with an exhibition game against Rikkyo University of Japan at 3 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
