Cardinal Falls to Cal in Women's Tennis Action

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 5 Stanford women's tennis team fell to No. 4 Cal 5-4 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations "Match of the Week" at Taube Family Tennis Stadium this afternoon.

With the loss, Stanford falls to 3-1 in conference play, while its overall score drops to 11-2. The Bears remain undefeated at 4-0 in the Pac-10, 6-0 overall. Stanford still leads the all-time series with Cal 38-5. The last time the Cardinal fell to the Bears was in 1993.

Ten of the 12 singles players who take the court today are in the top 100 of the ITA rankings and three of the six doubles tandems are in the top 15. Leading the way was Stanford's Marissa Irvin, who topped No. 32 Amanda Augustus of Cal 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in singles action. At 5-4 in the second set, Augustus couldn't convert on three break points that would have given her the set, allowing Irvin to tie the set at five games apiece.

Later, an Irvin service ace gave her match point with the score 6-5. But Augustus held on and won the set in a 7-2 tiebreaker. Irvin took care of business in the third set.

The doubles matchups proved vital, as the meet was tied at three after the singles. But the Bears won two of three to secure the team victory. The duo of Irvin and Teryn Ashley lost twice this weekend, after compiling a 24-2 doubles record.

Stanford remains at home next weekend for matches against the Arizona schools in continuing Pac-10 action. No. 24 Arizona will visit Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Fri., March 5 at 1:30 p.m., while the Cardinal will host No. 12 Arizona State on Sat. March 6 at noon.
