Cardinal Holds off Cats for Sweep

TUCSON, Ariz. - After failing to hold an eight-run lead, fifth-ranked Stanford rallied with three runs in the top of the eighth to defeat Arizona, 12-11, and complete a three-game sweep of the Cats here Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinal, who matched their season-high of 19 hits for the second consecutive game, improved to 20-8 on the year and lead the Pac-10 at 6-0 in conference play. The Cats fell to 20-14 and 3-6. Stanford's start is its best in league play since 1985.

The Cardinal took the lead on a pair of first-inning runs. Senior third baseman Josh Hochgesang and junior designated hitter Stephen Chan each then hit three-run homers for Stanford in the third to stretch the lead to 8-0.

The Cats rallied, pulling within one with a six-run fourth inning. Freshman right fielder Shelley Duncan then gave Arizona the lead with a three-run homer, his 13th of the year, in the sixth inning.

Stanford then retook the lead in the eighth with three runs. Hochgesang and junior catcher Damien Alvarado drove home runs with base hits, before junior Craig Thompson drove home Hochgesang with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to right.

Sophomore right fielder Joe Borchard matched his career-high with four hits, and senior third baseman Josh Hochgesang drove in four runs to pace the Cardinal attack.

For the Cats, freshman Kenny Huff had three hits, and Duncan drove in a total of four runs.
