STANFORD, Calif. - After a one-day postponment due to rain, the fifth-ranked Stanford Cardinal women's tennis team defeated Illinois State 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Center.
Playing in the No. 1 spot, Stanford freshman Marissa Irvin defeated Illinois State's Naoko Moore 6-1, 6-2. Senior Marisa MacLennan returned to competition with a victory over the Redbirds Brigette Zarazee 7-5, 6-2, after spending the fall quarter studying in Italy. She was the only upperclassman in a Cardinal lineup that featured four freshmen and one sophomore.
The team will begin Pac-10 play next weekend when it hosts Washington State on Fri., Jan. 29 at 1:30 p.m.; Washington on Sat., Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m.; and Oregon on Sun., Jan. 31 at noon. All matches will be played at Taube Family Tennis Center.
