TEMPE, Ariz. - ASU's Allison Bradshaw upset Marissa Irvin, the second-ranked player in the country, but it was not enough as the 11th-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team (11-7, 3-4 Pac-10) fell to the fifth-ranked Stanford Cardinal (20-2, 6-0 Pac-10) 5-4 today at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Court one was a match-up of the top two freshmen in the country with No. 2 Irvin and No. 30 Bradshaw. Bradshaw (24-13) handed Irvin (15-2) only her second loss in dual-match play, defeating her 7-6 (4), 7-5. Celena McCoury also registered a win for the Devils defeating No. 58 Keiko Tokuda, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
The match came down to the final doubles match on court number two, where the 30th-ranked pair of Gabriela Lastra and Lauren Kalvaria defeated the Sun Devils duo of Alison Nash and McCoury 8-4. ASU was down 4-2 coming into doubles when No. 20 Bradshaw and Katy Propstra defeated the second-ranked doubles team of Teryn Ashley and Irvin, 9-7. Then, Karin Palme and Faye DeVera defeated Tokuda and Jennifer Heiser, 8-1 to pull the Devils even at four points apiece.
