Cardinal Routs Cal Poly SLO, 8-1

May 20, 1999

STANFORD, Calif - Stanford pitcher Tony Cogan (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park HS) established a new school record with his 104th career appearance in the Cardinal's (41-13) 8-1 non-conference victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (21-32) on Thursday night at Sunken Diamond. The 104 appearances breaks Steve Chitren's (1986-89) old mark of 103.

Cogan set the record by throwing a scoreless ninth to preserve the Cardinal's 13th win in its last 14 games. The senior left-hander, who leads the Pac-10 with a 2.89 ERA in 28 appearances this season, also holds the school single season appearance mark with 36 in 1997.

Cal Poly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on a towering homer over the left field scoreboard by junior Steve Wood (La Puente, CA/Arizona State University), but could not get on the board again. The Mustangs managed just three hits after the second inning against three different Cardinal pitchers, with starter Jason Young (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS) earning the win to improve to 9-3. Young allowed just three hits and one run over 6.0 innings, while striking out six. The six strikeouts gives Young 144 in '99 and ties him for third with Steve Dunning (1970) on Stanford's single season list.

Stanford took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Eric Bruntlett (North Lafayette IN/Harrison HS), a run-scoring single by Billy Jacobson (Spring, TX/St. Thomas HS) and a sacrifice fly from Jeff Rizzo (San Diego, CA/La Jolla HS). Rizzo later added a two-run single in the eighth to help break the game wide open.

Cal Poly starter Josh Morton (Fair Oaks, CA/Del Campo HS) worked the first 6.2 innings, and received the loss to drop to 2-4. The Mustangs were led offensively by two hits apiece from Bryan Gant (Northridge, CA/Chatsworth HS) and Brian Oxley (Concord, CA/Los Medanos JC).

Game two of this three-game series is on Friday at 7 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. Stanford, the 1999 Pac-10 Champion, closes out regular season play this weekend and will open NCAA Tournament play on Friday, May 28 at 7 p.m. at Sunken Diamond against an opponent to be determined. The 64-team field will be announced on Monday, May 24 at noon on ESPN.
