SEATTLE - No. 2 Stanford scored 10 runs over the final two innings to hand Washington a 13-10 loss in a Pac-10 Conference baseball game Sunday at Husky Ballpark. The first-place Cardinal won the three- game series, two games to one.
Washington, now 19-12 overall and 7-5 in the Pac-10, fell into fourth place with the loss. Stanford improved to 25-9 on the season and 11-1 in the league.
Washington, once trailing 3-0 early in the game, carried an 8-3 lead into the eighth inning, when the Cardinal scored four runs to cut the deficit to one run. In the ninth, with UW closer Matt Massingale pitching, Damien Alvarado singled home Joe Borchard with the tying run. After a strikeout and a caught stealing gave the Cardinal two outs, an intentional walk and a hit batter loaded the bases. Massingale then hit Billy Jacobson with a pitch to send across Jason Young with the go-ahead run.
A grand slam by second baseman Jeff Rizzo capped the scoring. Rizzo finished the day 3-for-5 with seven runs batted in.
The Huskies got solo home runs from Dominic Woody, his 13th of the year, and Bryan Williamson in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't complete a comeback.
Massingale (1-2) suffered the loss while Cardinal reliever J.D. Willcox (1-0) earned the win. UW freshman Matt Hollod went 4-for-5 with four RBI, a home run, and a home run robbing catch in left field. Williamson added three hits in four at bats.
The Huskies hit the road this week for a pair of non-Pac-10 games at Oregon State on Tuesday and Wednesday. Next weekend, Washington plays host to Cal State Northridge in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
