Cardinal Upset by Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona women's gymnastics team upset the ninth-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 194.050-193.425, Friday night in front of a crowd of 1,058, in the McKale Center. Arizonas meet score of 194.050 is a season-high total, and it ties for No. 7 on the UA's all-time top-ten performance list. The Wildcats (7-4 overall, 3-2 Pac-10) also posted season-high scores of 48.650 on bars and 48.775 on beam against its seventh top-25 opponent of the season, and they swept the top-three spots on bars.

Arizona trailed by almost one point after the first rotation, but the turning point of the meet was the parallel bars. Traditionally, the Cardinal's strongest event, where it ranks fourth in the country, the Wildcats took the top four spots on the parallel bars. Having won the bars competiton, Arizona went on to win the last two events and eventually take home the team title.

Despite the loss, however, Stanford still had three different gymnasts win events. Sophomore Jen Exaltacion finished finished first in the vault with the second highest score of her career (9.775) on that event. In two other events, Stanford had the top two finishes. Freshman Katy Herbert came in first (9.875), while Exaltacion finished second in the beam (9.850). With a score of 9.875, senior Sarah Harding while senior Amy Murakami came in second (9.825).

After taking a week off, Stanford will host the University of Massachusetts on Friday, Mach 12 at 7:30 pm.
