GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Second-seeded Stanford (26-2) maintained its focus despite several weather-induced delays and defeated 15th-seeded Tennessee (18-8) in the round of the 16 at the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships. The Cardinal will face the winner of the Southern California versus Miami match in the quarterfinals, which will be played on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Note that this is a time change from the originally scheduled quarterfinal match time. NCAA officials moved the match back two hours to accommodate today's extended delays and allow for more rest for the competitors.
Stanford advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals with its 15th consecutive win of the season. Stanford has reached at least the semifinal round of every possible NCAA Tournament but one (1985).
Keiko Tokuda provided the clinching team point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Meiling Parks at the No. 6 position. Stanford freshman posted a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win against Agnes Wiski at the No. 1 spot, needing just 57 minutes to give the Cardinal their first point of the dual match.
Alison Ojeda logged Tennessees lone victory with a 7-5, 6-4 upset over seventh-ranked Teryn Ashley at the No. 2 position. Ojeda earned the Lady Vols their first singles win in the NCAA Round of 16 since 1990, when Southern Cal claimed a 7-2 win over UT.
