STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University head baseball coach Mark Marquess picked up his 900th career win on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinal (5-3) defeated Santa Clara (1-4) at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Marquess, who is in his 23rd season as Stanford's head coach, now has a career record of 900-470-5 (.656). He has led Stanford to two NCAA titles and eight Six-Pac titles, and also was the head coach of the gold-medal winning 1988 United States Olympic Team.
Stanford took a 5-0 lead after 3.0 innings and never looked back. The Cardinal took the lead for good in the top of the first on an RBI single by junior John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS). Stanford then pulled away with three more in the second, highlighted by RBI doubles by juniors Jeff Rizzo (San Diego, CA/La Jolla HS) and Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS).
On the mound, Stanford sophomore Justin Wayne (Honolulu, HI/Punahou HS) and freshman Brian Sager (Branford, CT/Branford HS) combined on a six-hitter. Wayne, who improved to 1-1, allowed just four hits and two earned runs over 7.0 innings, while walking one and striking out five. Sager finished up by allowing two hits over 2.0 scoreless innings. Starter Vince Boyanich (Vallejo, CA/Hogan HS) took the loss for the Broncos to drop to 0-1.
Game two of the holiday weekend series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stanford's Sunken Diamond.
