TUCSON, Ariz. - Fifth-ranked Stanford scored six eighth-inning runs, five with two outs, to rally to an 8-4 victory over Arizona here Friday evening in the first of a three-game series.
The Cardinal improved to 18-8 on the year and continue to lead the Pac-10 at 4-0 in league play. The Cats fell to 20-12 and 3-4.
After junior left fielder Nick Day tied the game at three with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth, Stanford posted five two-out runs. Wildcat freshman southpaw Brian Pemble walked junior second baseman Jeff Rizzo with the bases loaded to give the Cardinal the lead. Junior Joe Savig followed that up with a three-run pinch-hit double off of junior right-hander Mike Meyer to break the game open.
Senior left-hander Tony Cogan (2-1) picked up the win in relief for Stanford by throwing 3.0 hitless innings. Junior right-hander Josh Pearce (4-3) took the loss for the Cats.
Junior designated hitter Rafell Jones drove in a pair of runs for the Cats, while sophomore shortstop Keoni DeRenne reached base four times with a double and three walks.
