Florida Edges Stanford in WNITC Semifinals

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 5 Stanford women's tennis team will not get a chance to defend its 1998 USTA/ITA Women's National Indoor Team Championship, as it fell to top-ranked Florida 5-4 in a semifinal match in Madison, Wisc., Saturday evening.

In a match of previously unbeaten teams, the Cardinal fell to 10-1 in dual-match action, while the Gators improve to 8-0. Florida has now won 35 straight and has not lost since the 1997 NCAA final vs. Stanford. The series between the two schools was evened at 10-10.The Gators will face Duke in tomorrow's final.

The WNITC is now in its 12th year at the University of Wisconsin. Eight of the top 10 teams, according to the ITA, attended. Stanford has competed at this tournament each of those years and boasts a 38-8 record.
