Fresno State Tops Stanford Baseball, 5-3

January 31, 1999

STANFORD, CA - Junior Jeff Prieto (Clovis, CA/Buchanan HS) had a home run and three RBI to lead Fresno State (2-1) to a 5-3 victory over host Stanford (1-2) on Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.

The Bulldogs jumped on top with three runs in the top of the second, and held that lead the rest of the way. Prieto gave Fresno State a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run triple to right-center that scored juniors Simon Tafoya (Pittsburg, CA/Pittsburg HS) and Anthony Acevedo (Bakersfield, CA/Bakersfield JC). Prieto then made it 3-0 when he scored from third on a wild pitch.

Fresno State made it 4-0 with a single run in the top of the third, but the Cardinal answered back with three in the bottom half on a three-run home run by senior Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS). The home run was Hochgesang's second of the season.

Prieto then provided the Bulldogs with some insurance in the top of the seventh when he launched a solo homer to left. Prieto helped make a winner of freshman pitcher Nick Moran (Elk Grove, CA/Elk Grove HS), who was making his first career start. Moran allowed five hits and three runs over 5.1 innings to earn the victory. Junior left-hander Hans Smith (Central Point, OR/Crater HS) later closed things out with 2.2 scoreless innings to earn his second save in as many days.

For Stanford, junior Nick Day (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS), sophomore Joe Borchard (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) and freshman Andy Topham (Sacramento, CA/El Camino HS) had two hits apiece.

The Cardinal returns to action on Friday when its visits Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. in the first of a three-game set. Fresno State opens up its 1999 home schedule on Tuesday against Saint Mary's at 7 p.m.
