Men's Tennis Sweeps Arizona Schools

March 27, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. -The fourth-ranked Stanford men's tennis team swept the Arizona schools this weekend and remain undefeated at 5-0 in the Pac-10 conference.

With the 6-1 win over Arizona on Friday and the 4-3 rally over Arizona State this afternoon, the Cardinal improves to an 11-1 overall record. Arizona fell to 5-8, 0-6 in the Pac-10 while Arizona State dropped to 9-4, 2-1 in league play.

Stanford did not let a 45-minute rain delay delay its victory over the Wildcats. However, Arizona State earned an early advantage by sweeping all three doubles matches for the first point of the meet. In singles, the teams split the first four matches, giving the Sun Devils a 3-2 edge. On court No. 3, ASU's Jeff Williams upset K.J. Hippensteel 6-2, 6-3, handing the Cardinal freshman his first loss in dual matches this season. His streak ended at 12.

Stanford's Ryan Wolters and Alex Kim posted victories to tie the match at three points apiece. At No. 2 singles, the Cardinal's Geoff Abrams and ASU's Alex Osterrieth were heading into a third set. Abrams serve and volley game took control as he won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to lead the Stanford team to victory.

Stanford will return home for a non-conference match vs. North Carolina State on Wed., March 31 at 1:30 p.m.
