STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's volleyball team posted its second victory in as many matches as the Cardinal topped UC San Diego in four games tonight at the RIMAC Arena in San Diego. Game scores were 7-15, 15-12, 15-5 and 15-8.
Stanford was led by senior outside hitter Patrick Klein's 29 kills and 10 digs for his fourth double-double on the season. But it was the play of the Cardinal's two middle blockers that made a difference in the match.
Sophomores Dan Zhang and Brett Youngberg posted 13 and 18 kills, respectively as part of the offensive attack. But Zhang also recorded his first double-double on the season when he added 10 blocks (three solo, seven assist) to lead the team defensively. Youngberg added six block assists to the team's season-high 20 blocks, as the Cardinal outblocked the Tritons 20-7.
Sophomore setter Josh Lukens also brought a strong game, registering 76 assists, seven digs and three blocks for the Cardinal.
UC San Diego had four attackers post double digits in kills, led by Zack Hite's 16.
Stanford improves to 6-8, 4-8 in the MPSF. UC San Diego falls to 3-16, 0-13 in league play.
The Cardinal will take on San Diego State Wed., March 24 at 7 p.m. Stanford will return home for a rematch vs. San Diego State on March 27 at 3 p.m.
