Men's Volleyball Falls to Arizona, 3-1

March 5, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. - Arizona, a club volleyball team, came from behind to defeat Stanford in four games tonight at Burnham Pavilion. Game scores were 14-16, 15-7, 15-8, 16-14.

Cardinal outside hitter Patrick Klein posted 11 of his match-high 30 kills in the first frame, three of which fended off Wildcat game points while Stanford was trailing 14-11. An Arizona mishit gave the Cardinal the victory.

In game two, the Wildcats jumped to a 5-0 lead. Block assists by Nick Thompson and Vince Rooney - one of Arizona's 22 blocks on the night - ended game two in favor of the Wildcats.

Stanford found themselves down 14-1 in game three, but battled through 10 game points as the team slowly added points to its own side of the scoreboard. But a kill by UA's Kevin Jones moved the action to game four. The Cardinal had six game points it couldn't convert on and allowed the Wildcats to tie the score at 14 before eventually winning the match on a Cardinal mishit.

Unforced errors continue to plague the Cardinal, as the team recorded 20 service errors.

Freshman Larry Witt, who began the exhibition season as Stanford's starting setter, made his first start at outside hitter and posted 17 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Dan Zhang added 14 in the losing effort.

For Arizona, Jones and Rooney registered 22 kills each. Rooney, Brian Bowers and Thompson reached double figures in blocks for the Wildcats.

Stanford's record remains intact at 4-8 overall, 3-8 in the MPSF as the Cardinal cannont include statistics from matches played against club teams. Arizona improves to 20-4, 2-4 vs. NCAA competition.

The Cardinal will resume NCAA play vs. Mercyhurst on Sun., March 7 at 1 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion.
