Men's Volleyball Squad Suffers First Setback

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 4 BYU proved to be too much for the Cardinal, as No. 8 Stanford fell in three games Saturday night at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah. Game scores were 15-6, 15-12, 15-3.

It was the start of MPSF season for Stanford, who is 2-1 overall, 0-1 in the conference. BYU remains undefeated (6-0, 4-0).

The Cougars' Ossie Antonetti posted 10 kills in the first game and led BYU to a 14-7 lead in the second. Stanford battled back to 14-12, fighting off three game points, but it was enough as BYU held on for a 15-12 win.

Junior outside hitter Andy Witt led Stanford with 17 kills and five digs. He added three blocks in the losing effort. Sophomore middle blocker Brett Youngberg added 10 kills for the Cardinal. Sophomore middle blocker Dan Zhang led all defensive efforts with five blocks.

The Cardinal returns home and hosts Hawaii on Thurs., Jan. 28 at Burnham Pavilion. The team will face Hawaii again on Sat., Jan. 29, in Maples Pavilion, Stanford's second home court. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
