Men's Volleyball Tops CS Northridge, 3-1

STANFORD, Calif. - For the first time in seven tries this season, the Stanford men's volleyball team went into the second game of a match with a game-one victory. The Cardinal used that momentum to defeat Cal State Northridge at Burnham Pavilion 16-14, 15-8, 13-15, 15-7.

Stanford built a 10-0 lead in game one, but allowed the Matadors to tie the game at 11 apiece. Two service aces by the Cardinal's Gabe Gardner gave Stanford a 13-11 edge. Senior outside hitter Patrick Klein posted a kill to give Stanford game point, but Cal State Northridge was able to tie the game again, this time at 14 points each. Another Klein kill set up game point No. 2 and a block by senior middle blocker Jeremy Bart and Klein secured the victory.

In game two, the Matadors took an early lead, but two service aces by Klein tied the game at 5-5. A short cross-court kill by Gardner gave Stanford a 10-5 lead. A block and a kill by Klein set up two game points for the Cardinal. Again, a block by Bart ended the game.

In game four, Stanford came out strong and hit .625 in the frame. Bart posted his third block on the night to set up match point. Junior outside hitter Robin Lamb secured the victory with a service ace.

In all, four Cardinal attackers posted double figures in kills. Gardner led the way with 35, follwed by Klein with 18. Junior Josh Palacios registerd 12, while sophomore Brett Youngberg added 11. Klein posted a double-double after adding 11 digs to the winning effort.

Defensively for the Cardinal, Youngberg and sophomore setter Brad Griffith combined for and tallied five blocks each.

Stanford improves to 3-4 overall, 2-4 in the MPSF. Cal State Northridge falls to 1-6, 1-5 in league action.

The Matadors' Eckhard Walter posted 32 kills in the losing effort.

The Cardinal remains at home and will host UC Santa Barbara tomorrow night. The Sat., Feb. 13 match begins at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
