STANFORD, Calif. - After a four match absense, Stanford returned to the win column, posting a three-game victory over Mercyhurst this afternoon at Burnham Pavilion. Game scores were 15-2, 15-12, 15-13.
The Cardinal set the tone in game one, hitting .481. Junior outside hitter Joshua Palacios posted five kills in that frame and finished the afternoon with nine. Stanford's Josh Lukens and Brett Youngberg sealed the victory with one of their five match blocks.
Mercyhurst took a 6-2 lead in game two, but a red card issued to the Lakers' Adam Tokash swung the momentum in favor the Cardinal. A Stanford triple-block tied the game at 12 apiece, soon followed by a Gabe Gardner kill to end the game.
Lukens ended the match with a service ace, his third of the afternoon.
Leading the Cardinal was Gardner, with 19 kills, follwed by Patrick Klein with 10. Klein also added a match-high seven digs in the winning effort.
Tokash led Mercyhurst with 15 kills.
Stanford breaks a four-match losing skid with the victory and improves to 5-8. Mercyhurst drops to 6-9.
The Cardinal will resume MPSF action at UC San Diego on March 23 and at San Diego State on March 24. Both of those matches will begin at 7 p.m. Stanford will return home for a rematch vs. San Diego State on March 27 at 3 p.m.
