STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 Long Beach State hit .400 for the match, remaining undefeated as it topped the Stanford men's volleyball team in four games tonight at Burnham Pavilion. Game scores were 15-9, 13-15, 15-8, 15-7.
Stanford emerged victorious in game two when junior outside hitter Gabe Gardner recorded one of his season-high 38 kills (.397) on the night. In game three, Stanford kept up with the 49ers, last tying the score at eight apiece. But the Cardinal was unable to keep up with the Long Beach State offense, dropping game the frame. LBSU jumped to a 6-0 lead in game four and held on for the match victory. Senior outside hitter Patrick Klein registered 23 kills in the losing effort, followed by sophomore middle blocker Brett Youngberg with 10. Sophomore setter Josh Lukens added 72 assists and 10 digs for his first double-double of the season.
Unforced errors hurt the Cardinal as Stanford tallied 16 service errors and nine blocking errors.
Five 49ers reached double figures in kills, led by Jim Polster and Matt Prosser, with 24 and 23, respectively.
Stanford falls to 4-8 overall, 3-8 in the MPSF, and has lost its past four matches. The 49ers improve to 10-0, 8-0 in league action. Along with BYU, LBSU is one of two undefeated teams left in the country.
The Cardinal will break from NCAA action next week and play two club teams. Arizona visits Burnham Fri., March 5 at 7 p.m., while Mercyhurst will visit on Sun., March 7 at 1 p.m.ty
