Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - Four Stanford pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout to lead the No. 10 Cardinal (4-3) to a 5-0 win over visiting Saint Mary's (0-5) on Wednesday evening at Sunken Diamond.

Stanford recorded two shutouts in 57 games last season, but already has two in its first seven contests this year. The Cardinal's first shutout of the season came in a season-opening 1-0 home victory over Fresno State on Jan. 29.

Sophomore right-hander Jason Young (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS) worked the first 6.0 innings to earn the victory and improve to 1-1. Young, who also worked the first 6.0 innings in the shutout win over Fresno State, allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out a career-high nine. Young has not allowed a run in 12.0 innings of work at Sunken Diamond in '99, while allowing just four hits and striking out 16. Freshmen Brian Sager (Branford, CT/Branford HS) and Mike Wodnicki (Southington, CT/Southington HS) and senior Tony Cogan (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park HS) preserved the shutout with 1.0 scoreless inning of work apiece.

The Cardinal took the lead for good on an RBI single by junior Jeff Rizzo (San Diego, CA/La Jolla HS) in the bottom of the second. The winners later added two in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Senior Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) had two hits and a run scored to lead the Cardinal, while junior Damien Alvarado (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) drove in two.

Senior Dan Donohue (Orange, CA/Mater Dei HS) accounted for most of the Gael offense by going 3-for-4. Starter Chris Bye (Englewood, CO/Regis Jesuit HS) took the loss on the hill for the visitors, and fell to 0-2.

Stanford returns to action on Saturday at Santa Clara (1-3) at 1 p.m. in the first of a three-game series. Saint Mary's kicks off a three-game series at Hawaii on Friday at 7 p.m.
