EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 18-ranked University of Oregon softball team split a pair of games with No. 14 Stanford, losing game one 10-1 (six innings) and winning game two, 2-0, today at Howe Field. Senior pitcher Jennie Cook, pitching for the first time since April 11, threw a complete-game shutout in game two.
The Ducks are now 39-23 overall and 10-14 in the Pac-10 while Stanford stands at 39-19 overall and 9-15 in the Pac-10.
In game one, Stanford scored nine unanswered runs on six hits in innings five and six to down the Ducks, 10-1, in six innings. Oregons only run came in the bottom of the first inning when Missy Coe doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a Katie Mackey fielders choice and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk by Cook. Freshman Connie McMurren took the loss for Oregon (15-10) as she let up eight runs on nine hits. The Ducks were outhit in the game 10-4. Marcy Crouch picked up the win for the Cardinal, improving her record to 21-10 on the year.
In the second game, Oregon knocked around five hits and scored a pair of runs to down the Cardinal, 2-0. The Ducks manufactured single runs in both the first and sixth innings. In the first inning, Coe singled to right field, moved to third on a Mackey (2-for-3) doubled to right center and scored on a Cook fielders choice. The Ducks second run came in the sixth inning when both Lindsey Welch and Maegan Christie led off the inning with back-to-back walks, were sacrificed over a base by a bunt from Christi Shelton and Welch scored on a Andrea Gustafson single to right field. Cook (12-6) pitched the complete-game shutout, allowing only four hits while striking out four.
The Ducks will continue Pac-10 play tomorrow at Howe Field when they face No. 19 California with doubleheader action to begin at 1:00 p.m.
