No. 3 Stanford Defeats No. 9 Texas, 11-8

AUSTIN, Texas - No. 9 Texas fell to No. 3 Stanford in Game #2 of a three-game series at Disch-Falk Field as the Cardinal posted an 11-8 victory this afternoon. Stanford (16-7) scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to overtake a one-run Texas (20-8) advantage and even the series at one game apiece. Both teams received good performances as the plate, combining for 30 total hits as Stanford posted a season-high 18 hits as a team.

Pacing the Texas attack were Jason Cox (Lone Star, Texas/Daingerfield/Northeast Texas JC), who went 2-for-5 with one triple, one RBI, and a run scored while extending his hitting streak to 12 games, and Jeff Ontiveros (Round Rock, Texas/ Round Rock), who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and his eighth home run of the season. Of note, Cox is now tied for the team lead with 13 multiple-hit games on the year. Other contributors included Justin Welch (Hooks, Texas/Hooks/Seminole JC), Sam Anderson (Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite/Navarro JC), and Jason Aspito (Itasca, Ill./Driscoll Catholic), who each had a pair of hits on the afternoon. Stanford was led by Jeff Rizzo (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla), who went 4-for-6 with one double, two RBI and one run scored, Joe Borchard (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo), who went 3-for-5 with one double, a home run, three RBI and one run scored, and John Gall (Portola Valley, Calif./St. Francis), who went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored.

Suffering the loss for the Longhorns was Ryan France (Austin, Texas/Westwood), who dropped to 1-1 on the season after allowing three runs in relief. Meanwhile, Austin Coose (Kokomo, Ind./ Kokomo) closed out the game for the Cardinal with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up a win in his first appearance of the year. The deciding game of this three-game set will take place at Disch-Falk Field tomorrow, Monday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m.. Scheduled starters are D.J. Jones (Forney, Texas/Forney/Navarro JC) (5-1, 3.23 ERA) for Texas and Brian Sager (Branford, Conn./Branford) (2-0, 4,74 ERA) for Stanford.
