No. 6 Oklahoma Men's Gymnastics Edges Stanford

STANFORD, Calif - The 11th-ranked Stanford men's gymnastics team recorded its highest score of the year (224.65), but fell to #6 Oklahoma (225.225) by 0.575 points in a close battle between the two schools Saturday night at Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal led from the beginning and had the lead going into the final event. However, the Sooners recorded their highest score of the meet on the last event, the parallel bars (37.975), to overtake the Cardinal. For the evening, Stanford won three events while Oklahoma won three events.

The Cardinal was led by junior Jason Katsampes, who won the rings (9.80) and registered a 47.30 on his five events, which is an average of 9.46 per event. Another Stanford gymnast who did well was junior Craig Nesbitt, who won the vault (9.40) and finished second on the parrallel bars (9.55). Nesbitt was also impressive as he competed in all six events- recording his first all-around score (55.65) of the year.

The star of the meet, however, was Oklahoma's Todd Bishop. A senior from Latham, New York, Bishop won the horse (9.75), parallel bars (9.825) and high bar (9.85) as he led the Sooners to victory.

The next meet for the Cardinal is March 26 & 27 when Stanford travels to Norman, Oklahoma for the 1999 MPSF Championshpis. The starting time of the meet is 7:00pm at the Lloyd Noble Center.
