STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Women's Gymnastics Team had a terrific night, beating Arizona State in three out of four events at Burnham Pavilion. In their second home dual meet, the Cardinal outscored the Sun Devils,195.775-194.250, in front of a crowd of 496.
Stanford pulled ahead from the beginning, scoring 48.675, to Arizona State's 48.375, in the first rotation. They remained ahead after all of the following rotations with great performances in each event.
The Cardinal swept the Uneven Bars with Senior co-captain Amy Murakami leading the way with a 9.90. She was followed by Sophomore Jennifer Exaltacion, who finished second with a 9.875. Freshman Becky Meldrum also scored a 9.875. The Beam was also a standout event for the Cardinal as Exaltacion set a new team record with a score of 9.975. The record was previously held at 9.90 by three Stanford gymnasts in 1997.
As a team the Cardinal dominated throughout the meet, with a Stanford gymnast winning each individual event. Murakami won both the Bars (9.875) and the Floor Exercise (9.925), while Exaltacion won the Beam (9.975) and the Vault (9.800). The Cardinal also captured the entire All-Around placing; Murakami in first (39.275), sophomore Jenny Wilson in second (39.225) and Exaltacion in third (38.975).
The next meet for the Cardinal is Friday, February 26 when the team travels to Tucson where it will take on the University of Arizona. The starting time of the meet is 7:30 pm (MST) at the McKale Center.
