No. 9 Texas Rallies for 9-8 Win Over No. 3 Cardinal

AUSTIN, Texas - No. 9 Texas posted its sixth win of the season againstan opponent ranked in the top five nationally against No. 3 Stanfordthis afternoon in front of 5,412 spectators at Disch-Falk Field by afinal of 9-8. The Longhorns regained the lead for good in the bottom ofthe eighth by scoring a pair of runs to mark the fifth and final leadchange of the game.

Picking up the win for the Longhorns (20-7) was junior ScottDunn (San Antonio, Texas/ Churchill), who improved to 7-2 on the year.Dunn pitched eight innings while setting a single-season career high forwins, eclipsing the six he tallied in 1998. D.J. Jones (Forney,Texas/Forney/Navarro JC), meanwhile, came on to pitch the ninth andretired the Cardinal in order to earn his second save.

At the plate for Texas, freshman Ryan France (Austin, Texas/Westwood)drove in a career-high four runs, while accounting for a three-runtriple in the fourth inning that gave Texas its first lead at 3-2.

Other notables included the duo of Jason Moore (Miami, Fla./WestminsterChristian) and Tommy Nicholson (Anaheim, Calif./Espranza), who each hada pair of hits, and Jason Cox (Lone Star, Texas/ Daingerfield/NortheastTexas JC), who extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a fourthinning double.

Suffering the loss for Stanford (15-7) was Brad Drew (Waterloo,Ontario/Waterloo Inst.), who pitched 3.2 innings in relief and allowedTexas to score its final three runs to drop to 1-3 on the year.

Leading the way offensively for the Cardinal were Nick Day (Las Vegas,Nev./Green Valley) and Damien Alvarado (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit), whoeach went 2-for-5 with one double and a home run while driving in fourand three runs, respectively, and Joe Savig (Lodi, Calif./St. Mary's),who went 2-for-4 with one double and an RBI.

These two teams square off again at Disch-Falk Field tomorrow, Sunday,March 21, at 1 p.m. in Game #2 of their three-game series. Scheduledstarters are Dax Leone (Shawnee, Okla./Shawnee/Seminole JC) (3-2, 5.62ERA) for Texas and Justin Wayne (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) (2-1, 5.31ERA) for Stanford.
