AUSTIN, Texas - No. 9 Texas posted its sixth win of the season against an opponent ranked in the top five nationally against No. 3 Stanford this afternoon in front of 5,412 spectators at Disch-Falk Field by a final of 9-8. The Longhorns regained the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth by scoring a pair of runs to mark the fifth and final lead change of the game.
Picking up the win for the Longhorns (20-7) was junior Scott Dunn (San Antonio, Texas/ Churchill), who improved to 7-2 on the year. Dunn pitched eight innings while setting a single-season career high for wins, eclipsing the six he tallied in 1998. D.J. Jones (Forney, Texas/Forney/Navarro JC), meanwhile, came on to pitch the ninth and retired the Cardinal in order to earn his second save.
At the plate for Texas, freshman Ryan France (Austin, Texas/Westwood) drove in a career-high four runs, while accounting for a three-run triple in the fourth inning that gave Texas its first lead at 3-2.
Other notables included the duo of Jason Moore (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) and Tommy Nicholson (Anaheim, Calif./Espranza), who each had a pair of hits, and Jason Cox (Lone Star, Texas/ Daingerfield/Northeast Texas JC), who extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a fourth inning double.
Suffering the loss for Stanford (15-7) was Brad Drew (Waterloo, Ontario/Waterloo Inst.), who pitched 3.2 innings in relief and allowed Texas to score its final three runs to drop to 1-3 on the year.
Leading the way offensively for the Cardinal were Nick Day (Las Vegas, Nev./Green Valley) and Damien Alvarado (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit), who each went 2-for-5 with one double and a home run while driving in four and three runs, respectively, and Joe Savig (Lodi, Calif./St. Mary's), who went 2-for-4 with one double and an RBI.
These two teams square off again at Disch-Falk Field tomorrow, Sunday, March 21, at 1 p.m. in Game #2 of their three-game series. Scheduled starters are Dax Leone (Shawnee, Okla./Shawnee/Seminole JC) (3-2, 5.62 ERA) for Texas and Justin Wayne (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) (2-1, 5.31 ERA) for Stanford.
