FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman Robin Walker had a two-out RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning leading Stanford to a 4-1 victory over Pacific in the first game of the Cal State Fullerton Easton Showcase. With the win, Stanford improves to 14-4 overall while UOP drops to 7-5 overall.
The Tigers scored first with a run in the top of the second. With two outs, freshman Tiffany Heilbut singled up the middle to score senior Brandee McArthur, who reached base via a single.
Stanford, however, responded with a single run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a leadoff home run by freshman Jessica Mendoza. The home run was Mendoza's third shot of the year, but more importantly it was the team's ninth this season. The nine home runs breaks the school record of eight, which was set in 1997 and 1998.
Mendoza also started a three-run rally in the sixth as she singled with one out. After the next batter popped out, Mendoza stole second, putting her in position to score with a base hit. Walker did more than that as she tripled to right center and scored Mendoza, giving the Cardinal a 2-1 lead. On the next play, Marcy Crouch hit a grounder, but it was booted by the Tiger second baseman. The error allowed Walker to score with the Cardinal's third run of the game. Crouch later came around to score the fourth and final run when freshman Christina Chao singled her home.
Senior Becky Blevins (9-1) took the win for Stanford as she pitched all seven innings. Blevins struck out ten and gave up only two hits for the game.
