STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University softball team swept 10th-rankedArizona State in a Pac-10 doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at theStanford Softball Complex. The No. 15 Cardinal took game one by a 6-2 score,then won game two by a 1-0 decision. With the wins, Stanford moves to37-18 overall, 7-13 in the Pac-10, while ASU drops to 36-18, 7-13 in thePac-10.
In the first game, Stanford took the lead with five runs in thesecond inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, senior Michele Acostasingled home a run to make it 1-0. After the next batter struck out, RobinWalker, who reached earlier on a base hit, scored on a squeeze bunt byJennie Foyle. On that same play, the ASU catcher mishandled the throw homeand pitcher Marcy Crouch came home to score, making it 3-0. One out later,freshman Jessica Mendoza hit a single to left that scored Acosta and Foyleto complete the scoring for the inning. Later in the game, the Cardinaladded an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run by Acosta, her firstof the year. In the seventh inning, the Sun Devils went on to score tworuns but it wasn't enough as Crouch (20-9) hung on for the win. For thegame, Stanford was led by Acosta, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored andtwo RBI.
Game two saw a pitcher's battle as neither team could manage morethan five hits. The game was scoreless going into the fifth inning, butthat's when the Cardinal broke through with the game-winning run. With twoouts, Ramona Shelburne stole second base and then scored on a single downthe right field line by catcher Kellie Wiginton. That is all Stanford wouldneed as senior Becky Blevins (17-9) limited the Sun Devils to two hits andrecorded the 34th shutout of her career. In fact, at one point Blevinsretired 19 straight ASU batters before giving up a walk with two outs inthe seventh inning.
Stanford returns to action tomorrow when the Cardinal hosts #3Arizona in its final home games of the year. The first game of the twinbill will begin at 1:00 pm.
