Postgame Quotes

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford defeated Nevada 7-4 on Sunday afternoon to win the NCAA Regional played at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal (46-13) now advances to the NCAA Super Regional, where it will play either Pepperdine or USC next weekend. Nevada concludes its season with a 38-20 record.

It didn't take long for Stanford to score as a two-out RBI single by Joe Borchard gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead in the first.

Nevada took its only lead of the game with two runs in the fourth thanks to two Stanford errors. With two outs and runners on first and second, the Stanford first baseman mishandled a ground ball that allowed Lyle Overbay to come around and score. As Overbay scored, the Cardinal second baseman overthrew the play at the plate allowing Matt Ortiz to touch home.

That would be the only lead that the Wolf Pack would take because Stanford went onto score three runs each in both the fourth and sixth innings. With the bases loaded and one out, a sacrifice fly by Nick Day plated John Gall to tie the game. Stanford then scored two more runs in the fourth on successive errors by the Nevada pitcher and second baseman. The Cardinal later added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Day and a two-RBI single by Edmund Muth.

Nevada would go onto add two runs in the eighth, but it wouldn't be enough as Stanford would win the game by a three-run margin.

Taking the win for the Cardinal was Brian Sager (6-0), who tossed 7.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs and four hits. The hitting star for the Cardinal was Craig Thompson, who had three hits and scored a run.

Nevada right fielder Lyle Overbay finished the day with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored.
