Stanford Volleyball Edges UCSB

STANFORD, Calif. -- The 11th-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team defeated No. 15 UC Santa Barbara in four games tonight in MPSF action at Burnham Pavilion. Game scores were 15-13, 13-15, 17-15, 15-13.

The Cardinal jumped out to an 8-1 lead, but the Gauchos were able to tie the score at eight apiece. UC Santa Barbara held off five game points before a UCSB hitting error gave the game to Stanford.

In game two, sophomore middle blocker Dan Zhang entered the game with the score favoring the Gauchos by two points. Zhang, who has missed the past two matches due to a knee injury, immediately recorded two kills to give the Cardinal momentum. But it wasn't enough, as UCSB held on for the win.

In game three, Stanford held off four game points by the Gauchos and tied the score at 14. The Cardinal then battled through six game points of their own before a solo block by Gabe Gardner ended the frame and secured the victory.

Outside hitter Patrick Klein posted his second double-double of the night, registereing 32 kills and 11 digs. Gardner also reached a double-double, tallying 31 kills and 13 digs.

Middle blocker Brett Youngberg posted eight blocks to lead the Cardinal defensively. He also added 19 kills to the winning effort.

Stanford improves to 4-4 overall, 3-4 in the MPSF. The Gauchos fall to 3-5, 2-5 in league action.

The Cardinal travels south and will face Loyola Marymount on Thurs., Feb. 18 and Pepperdine on Sat., Feb. 20. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. Stanford defeated LMU earlier this season in five games.
