STANFORD, Calif. - The eighth-ranked Stanford women's golf team had trouble competing against an extra opponent - the weather - and struggled to 14th place in a 17-team field at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
Unusual for the desert, the weather turned cold and windy, keeping all competitors away from their best golf. Duke's Beth Bauer was the only individual to card an even-par score. The Cardinal posted a 31-over-par 319 on the par-72, 6,090-yard Karsten Golf Course. TCU and Duke posted 304s and lead the team competition. Host Arizona State sits in third with a 305, while Arizona and San Jose State round out the top-five spots, both carding 307s.
Stephanie Keever and Hilary Homeyer sit in 39th place to pace the Cardinal, with seven-over 79s. Teammate Jessica Belskis also carded a 79, although she is competing as an individual.
The second round will begin at 8 a.m. MST off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees Tuesday morning.
