DAVIS, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford scored on its first four possessions and led 10-0 at the half en route to a 14-0 win over No. 15 Michigan in the first round of the Collegiate National Championships Friday morning at UC Davis. Stanford (23-5) advances to meet the winner of this morning's game between No. 7 UC Davis and No. 10 Massachusetts in the quarterfinals, this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Michigan will play the loser of the Davis-UMass game this afternoon at 1:45 p.m.

Sophomore Anne-Marie Keenan (Woodside, CA/Menlo School) scored 29 seconds into the game to start things off for the Cardinal. Freshmen Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA/Merced) and Kate Pettit (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge) scored two goals each and sophomore Hilary Gallogly (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) scored once to make it 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. The game was Stanford's first shutout since a 19-0 win over Long Beach State on April 10, 1998.

"We came out and played great," Stanford Coach John Tanner said. "We wanted to establish an energy level and pace to last through the weekend, and we did that. That was our first shutout of the year and the goalies played great."

Sophomore Dani Bell (Long Beach, CA/Wilson) scored four goals, Dingeldein finished with three and Pettit had two. Eight of Stanford's 11 field players scored.

After this afternoon's quarterfinals, the tournament continues at UC Davis Hickey Pool with the semifinal round Saturday. The national championship game will take place Sunday afternoon.
