STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander Jason Young (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS) threw a complete game five-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead sixth-ranked Stanford (31-12 overall, 15-4 in the Pac-10) to a 7-0 victory over visiting Oregon State (15-31, 3-13) on Friday night at Sunken Diamond. Young has went the distance six times in 1999, but the complete game shutout is his first of the season and collegiate career.
Stanford's win, coupled with USC's 4-2 home victory over UCLA on Friday night, leaves the Cardinal and Trojans tied for the Pacific-10 Conference lead at 15-4 with five games remaining. Stanford hosts Oregon State on Saturday at 1 p.m., while USC will again play host to UCLA on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Young (7-3), who struck out all but one Beaver starter (Corrie Willkie), was in command throughout. The right-hander allowed just one Beaver to reach scoring position - Josh Carter (Fallbrook, CA/Fallbrook HS) was stranded at third base in the second inning - and allowed just two hits over the final five innings. He also entered the night in eighth place on Stanford's single-season strikeout with 116, but finished up tied for fifth with Jack McDowell (1986) at 129. Stanford's single season strikeout record of 156 was established by Kyle Peterson in 1997.
The Cardinal took the lead for good in the bottom of the first when sophomore Billy Jacobson (Spring, TX/Sat. Thomas HS) singled to lead off the inning and came around to score after three of the next four Cardinal hitters drew walks. Jacobson set the table for the Cardinal all night long, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Stanford went on to take a 3-0 lead in the third on a two-run double to left-center field by sophomore Joe Borchard (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) and broke the game wide open on senior Josh Hochgesang's (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) two-run home run to left in the bottom of the eighth. The home run was the 40th of Hochgesang's career, making him just the fifth Stanford player to ever reach that plateau.
Carter led Oregon State offensively with a pair of singles, while starting pitcher Joe Gerber (Portland, OR/Grant HS) dropped to 0-2 on the season after allowing seven hits and five runs, four earned, over 7.0 innings.
