Young Strikes Out 16 in 11-1 Baseball Win

March 5, 1999

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander Jason Young (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS) struck out 16 batters en route to a complete game six-hitter in Stanford's (13-6) 11-1 victory over Arizona State (19-6) on Friday night at Sunken Diamond in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams.

Young has now thrown four consecutive complete games, and has allowed just seven runs and 19 hits in those 36.0 innings of work, while striking out 44 and walking nine. He is now 5-1 on the season with a 2.04 ERA in 53.0 innings of work. Young's 16 strikeouts left him just two shy of the Stanford single- game mark of 18 set by Steve Dunning on two occasions against USC in 1970.

The Cardinal gave Young all the offense it would need with two runs in the top of the third on an RBI double by senior Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sun ny Hills HS) and a run-scoring single by junior John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS).

Gall and Hochgesang were at it again in the fourth when they belted back-to-back homers in a six-run fourth inning that put the game away for good. After Jeff Rizzo's (San Diego, CA/La Jolla HS) two-run triple made it 5-0, Hochgesang hit a two-run blast over the left-center field wall. Gall then followed with his first homer of the year to give the Cardinal an 8-0 advantage. Stanford later added a third homer when junior Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS) hit a two-run shot to right in the seventh.

Young took it from there, recording 11 strikeouts in the first five innings alone. In a stretch that spanned the second through sixth innings, Young struck out nine of the 12 batters he faced. The Sun Devils later spoiled Young's shutout on Mark Ernster's (Glendale, AZ/Ironwood HS) run-scoring single with one out in the ninth.

Game two of the series is on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
