Second-Ranked Water Polo Team Sinks UC Davis, 17-6

DAVIS, Calif. - Brian Heifferon scored all three of his points during an eight-point second quarter that lifted #2 ranked Stanford to a 17-6 victory over #17 UC Davis in a men's water polo match Sunday at Solano College.

Stanford scored five straight points in a 2:30 minute stretch, getting three from Heifferon and one each from Peter Hudnut and Mark Amott, in taking a 9-3 lead with 1:19 left in the first half. Chris Hagans scored for the Aggies, but Andy Walburger hit a two-point buzzer-beater from near the center line to give the Cardinal an 11-4 halftime lead.

Stanford extended the edge to 14-6 after three periods and went on for the win.

Ten different Cardinal players scored, with Onno Koelman and Jeff Nesmith joining Walburger, Amott and Hudnut with two points each. Arik Goodman collected six saves for Stanford.

Stanford upped its season record to 2-0.

The Cardinal travels to the Southern California Tournament this weekend (Sept. 18-19). Stanford will open play on Saturday against Long Beach State at 12:25 p.m., and later in the day (4:45 p.m.) against UC San Diego.
