Stanford Falls Short Against Third-Ranked Nebraska

Stanford, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked Stanford women's soccer team was unable to hold an early lead, falling to third-ranked Nebraska, 2-1, in the first day of the Stanford/Nike Tournament at New Maloney Field today. Top-ranked Santa Clara defeated Seton Hall, 4-0, in an earlier game.

The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead when senior Kelly Adamson scored her second goal of the season 63:52 into the match. Adamson received a pass from freshman Kelsey Carlson, which led to the header that put the Cardinal ahead.

Nebraska responded four minutes later when Kori Saunders scored on a Jenny Bensen pass to tie the game. The Cornhuskers took the lead at 72:03, when Isabelle Morneau netted a ball off a punch-out by Cardinal goalkeeper Carly Smolak.

Santa Clara used penalty kicks from Aly Bevins and Mandy Clemens to defeat Seton Hall, 4-0. The Broncos out-shot the Pirates 18-3 on the way to victory.

The tournament will continue on Sunday at 11 a.m. as Santa Calra faces Nebraska and Stanford takes on Seton Hall at 1 p.m.
