Stanford, Calif. - Senior Kelly Adamson scored her second goal in as many days as the 22nd-ranked Stanford women's soccer team defeated Seton Hall, 3-1, today at the Stanford/Nike Tournament at New Maloney Field. The victory improved Stanford's record to 4-2 this season. In today's other game, top-ranked Santa Clara defeated third-ranked Nebraska, 2-1, to capture the tournament title.
After a scoreless first half, Adamson received a pass from senior Jen O'Sullivan in the middle of the penalty box, before sending the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal to give Stanford a 1-0 lead. The goal came five minutes into the second half.
Stanford scored again in the 53rd-minute when senior Ronnie Fair took a free kick from 20-yards on the right side of the field, which sliced through the Seton Hall wall and past goalkeeper Marybeth Foran. It's Fair's second goal of the season.
Freshman Becky Myers came off the bench to score the Cardinal's final goal of the day. Off a corner kick taken by sophomore Erin Maurer, Myers tipped in a shot for her third goal of the season in the 56th-minute.
In all, Stanford tallied 22 shots against the Pirates, led by Adamson and freshman Marcia Wallis with four apiece. Seton Hall compiled six shots on goal, including Kelly Smith's breakaway goal in the 73rd-minute.
In the day's first game, Santa Clara received goals from Heather Aldama and Mandy Clemens in the first half on the Broncos way to victory. Nebraska cut the Santa Clara lead in half 65:44 into the game, when Lindsay Eddleman scored on a corner kick taken by Jenny Benson.
Adamson, O'Sullivan and sophomore Martha West were Stanford's representatives on the all-tournament team.
