STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Lesley Irvine (Northants, England/Loughborough University) had a goal and an assist to lead Iowa to a 2-0 win over Stanford at the Varsity Turf Field Friday afternoon. The Hawkeyes improve to 3-0 on the season while the Cardinal falls to 1-1 after seeing an 11-game home winning streak end.
Irvine scored with 5:56 remaining in the first half to put the Hawkeyes ahead. Iowa also scored late in the second half off a penalty corner. Irvine passed the ball out and Tiffany Leister (Oley, PA/Oley Valley HS) scored with 11:18 remaining in the game. The Cardinal had a few good opportunities, including a 50-yard series of give-and-gos from freshmen Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual HS) and Amanda Billmyer (Berwyn, PA/The Episcopal Academy) where Billmyer's shot went just wide. Iowa outshot the Cardinal 11-10 and had an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.
In an earlier game played at Stanford, California (4-0) defeated Hofstra (0-2) 4-1.
Stanford returns to action against Boston University Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on the Varsity Turf Field. Iowa will play Pacific Saturday at 3 p.m. at Stanford, following the Stanford-Boston game.
