Women's Soccer Unable To Upset Top-Ranked Broncos

Sept. 3, 1999

Santa Clara - The 13th-ranked Stanford women's soccer team lost its first game of the season, 3-1, in a hard fought battle with top-ranked Santa Clara today in front of a record crowd of 3,844 fans at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Cardinal fell behind early when Santa Clara's Mandy Clemens found the net in the 7th-minute of play. Clemens took a through pass from teammate Nikki Serlenga, then avoided a sliding Stanford goalie Carly Smolak to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage.

Clemens found her way around the Cardinal defense again in the 23rd-minute, going up the middle of the field to put away a pass from Aly Wagner.

But just four minutes later Stanford countered, as sophomore Martha West scored her first goal of the season, ending Santa Clara's streak of 13 regular-season games without allowing a goal which dates back to Sept. 24, 1998. West controlled a loose ball on the left side of the field before sending the ball to the far post, beating Santa Clara's goalkeeper Crystal Gordon.

Santa Clara capped-off the scoring when Megan Horvath took a long pass from Danielle Slaton to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead.

In all, Stanford managed six shots on goal compared to Santa Clara's 12. Smolak recorded six saves for the Cardinal.

Stanford, now 1-1-0 overall, will travel to the Hawaii Invitational to take on the University of Hawaii and the University of San Francisco beginning Thursday, Sept. 9 and continuing through Sunday, Sept. 12.
