Women's Soccer Defeats Hawaii 3-1

Sept. 9, 1999

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The 13th-ranked Stanford women's soccer team overcame a scoreless first half of play to defeat the University of Hawaii, 3-1, in Honolulu Thursday. Sophomore Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas) broke the scoreless tie before freshman Callie Withers (Los Altos, Calif.) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to cap off the Cardinal scoring.

West netted her second goal in as many games to put the Cardinal ahead in the 60th minute. Withers extended the Stanford lead ten minutes later with a header off an assist from senior Ronnie Fair (Los Altos, Calif.). The Cardinal freshman answered again in the 79th minute to give the Cardinal a commanding 3-0 lead.

Hawaii scored its lone goal of the game with just five minutes left in the match when Leila Wai converted a penalty kick. Despite allowing the penalty kick, goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, Ore.) recorded a save in 90 minutes of play.

Stanford dominated the match offensively by tallying 17 shots on goal compared to Hawaii's four.

Stanford will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 11, against USF in Hawaii. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
