San Jose State Quotes

Dave Baldwin (Head Coach)
"We felt when we came here that we throw the football, and I think we proved that we can. We miss Deonce Whitaker. He is our pied piper of this football team, but I think when you lose somebody like Deonce the whole team has to step up. It made us a better football team, and I think down the road it's going to make us a better football team."

"The whole team stepped up, I'm very proud of our defense. Number 5 (Troy Walters) is by far the best player we've seen all year. He is dynamic, and we could not stop him."

"We told them this was going to be a very high scoring game. There would be no way to stop or keep Stanford under 28 points, so we said we just have to keep playing our game and offensively we had to do it. We didn't worry about them coming back. Our kid knew that if we could move the ball, we'd have a shot. Fortunately we did, and we got some big plays."

"This was the first time we've scored on defense in two years, and it came at the right time."

"Our kids looked at this game as a championship game, and they didn't worry about point spreads, that's for somebody else.

Deonce Whitaker (SJSU Tailback)
"A win is a win, period. Even if I don't play, we still win, I'm happy."

"We all know we could play with any team if we get our heads together and just play hard."

"Our offense is always going to score, and today our defense played great."

Ron Jon Acuna (SJSU OLB)
"We had some incentive going up againt a good receiving corps. We did a lot of filmwork to prepare, and we had a lot of belief in each other."

"This is a great win for the team, and we knew Whitaker was questionable, so we knew we had to step it up."

Stanford Quotes

Tyrone Willingham (Head coach)"I thought coming in they were a good football team, and had a lot of weapons, but at the same time I thought our defense would be able to match up."

"I think they played a good football game."

(On the significance of the loss) "It means a loss. It means we're 3 and 2 now. But in the big scheme of things, it doesn't stop us from accomplishing anything we want to accomplish. It sets you back for a day or two, and hopefully that's all."

"I think we had trouble getting pressure to the passer as often as we'd like to. It made it difficult because they ran a lot of three-steps. Because of the four or five receiver sets, when you challenge sometimes they'll be able to go over the top, when you get back, the problem is that allows them to complete the passes in front of you. So I thought they did a nice job of mixing it up and keeping us off balance."

(On Joe Borchard) "I thought for the most part, he did a good job, and I'll take a look at the film and see what he did."

(If Stanford's injuries were a factor) "We just didn't play well enough."

Willie Howard (Defensive Tackle)
"As a defense, it's kind of hard if you get a three-step drop like that to be able to rush the passer, get good pressure on."

(On SJSU's receiver sets) "We tried to put ourselves in situations that allow us to go up against anything we see. We scouted them well. Obviously they came out and played. They did a good job, and credit to them."

Tim Smith (Strong Safety)
"It's like any other loss, you don't want them."

(On if Stanford came out flat) "Yeah, it kind of seemed that way in the first half."

Joe Borchard (QB)
"I didn't know what the decision would be, but I took most of the snaps in practice. I just prepared myself to start the whole week, and that's what happened."
