16th-Ranked Women's Soccer Pounds Arizona 5-2

Tucson, Ariz. - Four first half goals gave 16th-ranked Stanford all the momentum it needed to roll to a 5-2 victory over Arizona today at Murphy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. With the win, Stanford improves to 10-3 on the season and 3-0 in Pac-10 play.

Senior Ronnie Fair (Los Altos, Calif.) and freshman Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, Calif.) combined for four goals in the victory. Fair had two first half goals with the first coming eight minutes into the game on a direct kick. Fair's second goal came at 39:26 when she sent a ball from the top of the box into the left-side of the goal.

Carlson scored her first goal in the 26th-minute of play, dribbling through the defense before netting the ball. In the second half, Carlson closed out Stanford's scoring by taking a through ball from Martha West (Fort Worth, Tx.) in the center of the field before beating Arizona goalkeeper Shannon Monti.

Stanford's first goal of the game came from freshman Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, Calif.). Wallis scored six minutes into the game on a pass from senior Kelly Adamson (Simi Valley, Calif.).

Arizona got on the board just before the half on a goal from Brooke McManus. The second goal came from Chrissy Sanford in the 73rd minute.

Despite only scoring two goals, the Wildcats did out shoot the Cardinal 14-to-13. Stanford goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, Ore.) made two saves in 71 minutes in the net, before being replaced by senior Wendi Whitman (Tarzana, Calif.), who made one save and gave up a goal.

The Cardinal will face Arizona State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tempe, Ariz.
