Tempe, Ariz. - Two goals in the second half propelled the 16th-ranked Stanford women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Arizona State today in Tempe, Ariz. The victory extends Stanford's win streak to seven games, improving their record to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-10. Arizona State falls to 8-5 and 2-3 in the Pac-10 with the loss.
After falling behind in the 23rd minute, Stanford rallied to tie the match on senior Ronnie Fair's (Los Altos, Calif.) 20-yard free-kick in the 33rd minute.
The Cardinal fell behind again in the second half, but rebounded to score two goals in the final eight minutes of play for the win. Senior Kelly Adamson (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored the tying goal in the 73rd minute to set up freshman Kelsey Carlson's (Citrus Heights, Calif.) game-winner one minute later. Junior Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas) controlled a loose ball then fed it to Carlson, who scored on a three-yard shot, putting Stanford ahead for good.
For the weekend, Fair and Carlson scored three goals apiece, two coming against Arizona last Friday and one versus Arizona State today. Carlson scored the game winner in each game.
The win over Arizona State marks the 100th victory in Stanford head coach Steve Swanson's ten year coaching career (6 years at Dartmouth, 4 years at Stanford).
Stanford returns home on Friday, Oct. 22 to take on seventh-ranked UCLA at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, Oct. 24 versus 12th-ranked USC at 1 p.m. All three teams are currently tied for first place in the Pac-10.
