Oct. 22, 1999

The tenth-ranked Stanford women's soccer team scored six second half goals to defeat Pac-10 opponent and 15th-ranked UCLA, 6-0, at New Maloney Field in front of 1,403 fans.

After a hard-fought first half that saw both teams combine for seven shots and a scoreless tie, Stanford opened up the offense scoring six goals by five different Cardinal players and a own goal by the Bruin defense.

Frehsman Marcia Wallis started the scoring when she netted her seventh goal of the seaosn on a cornerkick from junior Erin Maurer in the 48th minute. Then after an own goal ten minutes later, making the score 2-0, Wallis was tripped in the penalty box to set up a Ronnie Fair penalty kick at 59:09. The goal gives Fair eight on the season to lead the team.

Despite a commanding 3-0 lead midway through the second half, Stanford added goals in the 74th minute, on a header by freshman Kelsey Carlson, and in the 75th minute, on freshman Allyson Marquand's first collegiate goal.

The Cardinal netted their final goal with 32 seconds remaining in the game when freshman Callie Withers scored on a header off a corner kick from Katherine Horney.

Stanford junior goalkeeper Carly Smolak made five saves in 90 minutes of play, recording her fourth shutout of the season. Smolak lowered her goals against average in the game to 1.16 on the season.

The win extends Stanford's win streak to eight games, improving its record to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in Pac-10 play.

The Cardinal will host USC on Sunday at 1 p.m. at New Maloney Field. Coming into tonight's game, the Cardinal and Trojans were tied for first place in the Pac-10.
