Stanford, Calif. - A goal by freshman Becky Myers (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles HS) in the 73rd minute proved to be the game-winner as the tenth-ranked Stanford women's soccer team (13-3, 6-0 Pac-10) defeated seventh-ranked USC (12-4, 5-1 Pac-10), 3-2, today in front of 1,246 fans at New Maloney Field. The win gives Stanford sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 Conference.
After controlling the ball in front of the goal, Myers sent a shot from 25-yards out that beat USC goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes for the decisive goal.
In the first half, USC took a quick lead in the eighth minute on a goal by Ali Fennell and held the lead until the 13th minute when junior Shauna Itri (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) scored her first goal of the season on a pass from senior Kelly Adamson (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal HS).
The Women of Troy struck again 39 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick by Isabelle Harvey. With USC holding a 2-1 advantage, senior Ronnie Fair (Los Altos, Calif/Los Altos HS) scored her fifth goal in four games on a direct kick from just beyond the penalty box. The goal tied the game, setting up Myers' heroics.
Stanford junior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, Calif./Lake Oswego HS) recorded two saves on four shots by USC, while USC's Shaelyn Fernandes made nine saves on 17 Stanford shots on goal.
The Cardinal will host California on Friday, Oct. 29 at New Maloney Field beginning at 7:30 p.m.
